2-1-1 Brevard among partners for Community Blueprint for Veterans

A grass-roots initiative seeks to identify needs of the growing number of veterans in Brevard County and ensure that the community has the resources to meet them.
The “Community Blueprint for Veterans” was launched at the beginning of the year when more than 70 people attended an introductory session at the invitation of the Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, which has more than 1,400 members locally.
Creation of a “Community Blueprint” is being encouraged by MOAA nationally, and 2-1-1 Brevard is among the Brevard organizations participating. (The local initiative is highlighted in this new video.)

2-1-1 Brevard part of grant to help in Health Insurance Marketplace

Federal funding of almost $120,000 will pay for educating Brevard residents about the Affordable Care Act and helping them shop for or enroll in plans through the new Health Insurance Marketplace, which opens Oct. 1.
United Way of Brevard received the award in August as part of a $4.2 million grant to University of South Florida, which is working with 11 partners in the state.
In Brevard, the one-year grant will pay for 1.5 positions to organize activities and serve as “navigators,” the federal government’s name for those assigned to provide in-person assistance under ACA. 2-1-1 Brevard will promote Marketplace and “navigator” information in the community.

The “tagline” for 2-1-1 Brevard’s logo says, “Get Connected,” and we consider helping make connections one of the most important things we do.

Staff from 2-1-1 will present a 90-minute workshop from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, “Maximize Community Connections with 2-1-1,” in an effort to ensure nonprofits, organizations and individuals know how to make the best use of our resources.

Suicide’s toll: At least 123 lives in Brevard County last year

At least 123 people took their own lives last year in Brevard County, the highest number in the past decade. But even one death by suicide is too many.
World Suicide Prevention Day is Tuesday, Sept. 10, a part of the recognition of World Suicide Prevention Week.
Almost every day, specialists trained in crisis intervention at 2-1-1 Brevard talk with callers about whether they are thinking about suicide. Thankfully, only a small percentage of callers are seriously considering it.
